The Leapfrog Group is a Washington-based, non-profit organization that serves as the employers’ local and national voice on hospital patient safety and quality. It was formed by employers who were outraged by the number of unnecessary mistakes and errors in hospitals. Leapfrog’s purpose is to identify and promote high quality, patient safety measures and to provide data to allow comparisons of hospitals on their ability to meet these standards.

Midwest Business Group on Health is the Illinois Regional Leader for The Leapfrog Group. Each year, MBGH encourages all Illinois hospitals to participate in The Leapfrog Group’s annual Hospital Survey. The results from the annual surveys are posted on The Leapfrog Group’s website to enable purchasers, providers, consumers and payers the opportunity to see how local and national hospitals compare on various quality and safety metrics. Reporting Hospitals show dedication to improve patient safety through transparency. Go to the Leapfrog Group’s website for more details and encourage employees to Compare Hospitals.

Employers and purchasers pay an average of $8,000 per hospital admission for hospital errors, injuries, accidents and infections. Leapfrog employer tools can significantly reduce spend and save lives in the process. Employers can check the quality of local hospitals by using Leapfrog Employer Resources and calculate the cost of poor safety with the Lives and Dollars Lost Calculator.

 What is Patient Safety?

Hospital Safety Grade

Since 2012, twice a year, Leapfrog assigns every hospital in the nation a letter grade from “A” to “F”, publicly reporting the level of quality & safety as determined by national performance metrics. A hospital does not need to submit their data to Leapfrog’s Hospital Survey to receive a letter grade. The Hospital Survey uses national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CSM), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey and Health Information Technology Supplement. Leapfrog’s Hospital Survey provides critical information to avoid medical errors, improve hospital safety for the community and to reduce deaths caused each year by hospital errors. Approximately 440,000 deaths each year are caused by medical errors, hospital injuries and infections.

Top Hospitals

The highest performing hospitals in several categories (urban, rural, teaching, and children’s hospitals) on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey are recognized annually with the prestigious Leapfrog Top Hospital Award. Top Hospitals have enhanced systems in place to prevent medication errors, higher quality on maternity care and high-risk procedures, and lower readmission rates. To be eligible for Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Award the Hospital must have received an “A” in the most resent scorings. In 2016 The Leapfrog Group awarded 10 Top Hospitals in Illinois.

Employers are encouraged to share the Leapfrog data and its website with their covered populations and use the data for its own contracting, tiers, incentive programs and communications.
