Midwest Business Group on Health Employer Survey Finds Growing Focus on Autism & Family Leave Benefits

CHICAGO – Oct. 9, 2018 – While only 20% of employers offer a paid family leave benefit, 55% are considering adding it next year per findings from a new member survey from the non-profit Midwest Business Group on Health (MBGH).

“It’s encouraging to see that more employers are providing workers with benefits focused on family leave, autism and partners, said Cheryl Larson, MBGH president and CEO. “Many employers recognize the value these benefits offer for worker recruitment and retention, especially in a tight labor market.”

Additional survey findings include:

  • To encourage baby bonding, 48% of employers offer paid parental leave
  • Of the 36% who do not offer a paid parental leave for baby bonding, it is being considered for next year
  • Of those that do offer it, 4% offer less than one week for the leave
  • For eligibility, 50% responded that any parent is eligible for the paid parental leave for baby bonding (of which 64% must be full time; 29% said part-time employees are eligible)
  • When it comes to timing of leave, 18% of employers let the employee choose if they’d like to take the leave benefit consecutively or intermittently; 68% offer the baby bonding benefit in consecutive days and 40% offer less than six weeks for paid family leave
  • Half (50%) of employers require employers to be Family and Medical Leave Act eligible for the paid family leave
  • For same sex partnerships, 52% of employers offer benefits to same sex partners and 43% offer benefits to opposite sex partners
  • For autism:
    • 69% offer these benefits, 45% have no limits to age, dollar and/or visits and 88% offer Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy
    • Of those that offer ABA therapy, 60% do not have limitations to the benefits (40% of those that have limits combine ABA with other therapy types)
