Agenda Coming Soon

There is growing use of accumulator adjuster programs by PBMs today. These programs work by prohibiting manufacturer copay card support from being applied to a patient’s deductible and out-of-pocket max. While the plan draws down the full amount of the copay card, when the assistance runs out (usually in 3-4 months), patients are faced with a substantial deductible balance – especially for those in high-deductible health plans. This can result in non-adherence to drug treatment and greater demand for health care services.

Proponents of copay cards view them as promoting affordable access to specialty medications and view accumulator adjuster programs as a means to creating cost barriers to specialty medication use.

On the other hand, employers who use accumulator adjuster programs view copay cards as a way to encourage unnecessary use of higher-priced, branded drugs and undermine their intended benefit plan design.

Expect a robust and controversial discussion where webinar participants will learn about the pros and cons of each program, impacts to people in high-deductible health plans, employer strategies to ensure reasonable access to medications and plan design recommendations.

At this webinar, you will:

  • Understand the pros and cons of how each program works
  • Hear the latest research on how they are impacting patient costs and health outcomes
  • Learn employer strategies to implement the right plan design for those in HDHPs to offset these programs related to patient out-of-pocket costs
