Event Description

The effectiveness of the Covid vaccine reminds us how critical preventive care is to reducing the prevalence of disease and maintaining and possibly extending life expectancy. In 2020, the average life expectancy at birth in the U.S. dropped 1.9 years as compared to 2018. A decrease of just 0.1 usually gets researchers’ attention! Hispanic American lifespan decreased by 3.9 years and Black American lifespan decreased by 3.25 years.

Many employers recognize the impact of the pandemic on delayed preventive care and health screenings. What many need is guidance on how they can work with the health care system to address the health-related losses of this foregone care.

Employers want high-value health care options, yet often have no impact on the quality of care delivered to their members. According to the Primary Care Collaborative, leading employers are looking for ways to reduce costs and drive consumers toward more cost conscious, high-value care options. They also want to encourage market-driven models such as value-based benefit design, high-deductible health plans and benefit design innovations. Significant evidence exists indicating that access to primary care is one of the highest value interventions, making it a natural emphasis for these programs. However, this pathway is not always emphasized in these new models and in health plan offerings. National policy changes are needed, along with strong evidence of the value to both employers and insurers to drive innovation that emphasizes primary care.

At this program, you will:

  • Learn how Advanced Primary Care models are driving performance through the use of shared-risk payments focused on preventive care
  • Identify ways to integrate value-based benefit design into preventive care strategies
  • See how addressing the challenges of delayed preventive care can impact member health and an employer’s bottom-line
  • Find ways to address disparities in both preventive care and equity in benefits
  • Discover preventive care approaches to support people with cancer
  • Determine ways to use communications to increase preventive screenings and routine vaccinations for members
