CHICAGO – December 16, 2020 – The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit representing hundreds of the nation’s most influential employers and purchasers of health care, and driven in Illinois by the Midwest Business Group on Health (MBGH), announced today fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. The independent grading system assigns A, B, C, D and F letter grades to general acute-care hospitals in the US based on their ability to protect patients from avoidable errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

Statewide, 104 hospitals were graded, and 35 earned an A, 28 earned a B, 38 earned a C, one earned a D, and two hospitals earned an F. Leapfrog has assigned letter grades to hospitals based on their patient safety performance twice annually since spring 2012. Of note, four Illinois hospitals have maintained straight As for 18 consecutive grading periods:

  • Elmhurst Memorial Hospital
  • Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital (Winfield)
  • OSF St. Mary Medical Center (Galesburg)
  • University of Chicago Medical Center

“The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade offers critical patient safety information to consumers, in an easily digestible way, so they can make informed decisions about where they seek care in Illinois,” said Cheryl Larson, MBGH president and CEO. “In light of the pandemic, the need for transparency and accountability across our nation’s hospitals has never been more urgent. We commend our hospitals in Illinois who continue to ensure that the safety of the patients they serve comes first.”

MBGH, a non-profit organization representing employer purchasers of health care, and the Leapfrog Group’s Illinois Regional Leader, annually encourages Illinois hospitals to participate in Leapfrog’s online patient safety survey.

“As we grapple with the current implications and lasting ramifications of COVID-19, hospital and patient safety have never been more important” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We thank all hospitals and heroic members of the health care work force for their efforts to protect and save patients this year.”

Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 US hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
