A business case is often built on a foundation that includes strong data proving the need for a product, service or benefit. In the case of vision care, data can most often be used as a part of the business plan argument, but not as the primary selling point. Collection of data can be challenging, depending on the type of vision benefit you offer, your access to a data warehouse and whether you use different vendors for health and vision benefits.

Consider using one or more of the following strategies/tactics as you incorporate data into your business case for eye health and vision care: 

• Use claims data to support the business case
• Identify if the vision benefit plan vendor supplies claims data
• Look at medical plan claims to identify how many covered lives are getting vision care from both doctors of optometry and ophthalmology
