In 2012, total costs for those diagnosed was $245 billion with direct medical costs at $176 billion and $69 billion in reduced productivity.  Diabetes alone represents 10% of all U.S. health care expenditures.

  • 26 million adults in the U.S. have diabetes - by 2025 it's projected to double to 50 million
  • 79 million are projected to have pre-diabetes
  • 7 million have the disease but are not aware

Impact to the employer is underestimated - On average, employees with diabetes use 8.3 sick-leave days annually compared with 1.7 sick-leave days for employees without diabetes.  At this Forum, we will discuss:

  • Impact of diabetes on employers and implications at the workplace
  • Managing diabetes in the era of health care reform
  • Employer innovation in plan design, incentives, onsite clinics and vendor collaboration
  • Stakeholder success in managing diabetes and related co-morbidities
