The Leapfrog Group

Improving
Patient Safety

Background

Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey collects and transparently reports hospital performance, empowering purchasers to find the highest-value care and giving consumers lifesaving-information they need to make informed decisions. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Leapfrog’s other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

Business Case for Employers

National and regional health plans use Leapfrog Hospital Survey results to power decision-support tools for their members, and regional coalitions use the data to activate their communities around safety and quality. Hospital Survey results are also used in the calculation of Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, and as the basis for value-based purchasing strategies.

  • Reporting data on over 2000 hospitals, with regional partnerships in 36 states.
  • Kick-started a national campaign to reduce early elective deliveries.
  • Launched a pay-for-performance program.
  • Designed the Leapfrog Hospital safety Grade to empower consumers to make better choices.

Leapfrog Group recently published a case study on Allegheny Health network's success resulting from system-wide commitment to Leapfrog reporting. This case study shows the power of working together for change. View report
